Hello, welcome to the Kings Cross Project's Community Parent Volunteer service. My name is Claire Foy and I am the Co-ordinator for this service.
A Community Parent Volunteer offers support, befriending and empowerment to parents/carers and their families, helping them to achieve their own goals and to offer informal parenting support. They also help parents/carers with low self-esteem, who may be feeling isolated and/or depressed, experiencing difficulties coping with their children, relationship difficulties, lack of family support etc.
What do I need to become a Community Parent Volunteer?
- An understanding of the issues facing families
- An ability to relate well and communicate effectively with families
- To accept and value each person as an individual
- A sense of humour
- Reliable
- An ability to provide appropriate emotional and practical support to families
- An ability to work as a member of a team, to work independently and also know when to seek advice and support
- An ability to handle confidential information sensitively and to work within and adhere to clear boundaries set by the Kings Cross Project
What is the procedure?
- Complete an application form
- Attend initial interview with the Community Parents Co-ordinator
- Attend the 6 session introductory training programme
- Referencing & Police checks
- Once matched, one-to-one visiting can begin
What do I get out of it?
- Varied initial training programme and ongoing training support
- Meet new friends
- Gain valuable experience working with families to help you get back into education or paid employment
- Put something back into the community and make a big difference
- A reference and enhanced Criminal Disclosure Check
