The Kings Cross Project has a history of successfully delivering European Funded Projects over the past 9 years as part of Halton Community Economic Development Plan. It has completed the Putting the Family First: New Opportunities Project which was matched with SRB5 funding and has exceeded targets - particularly around supporting local people to secure and remain in employment. The outputs created have enabled life changing experiences to take place for many participants.
The New Opportunities project is funded by the European Regional Development Fund and has the following aims:
- to encourage adults to re-engage in community participation through volunteering opportunities and adult learning thereby improving their employability through improving skills for life (basic numeracy and literacy).
- to embed basic skill development in courses and opportunities for learning which will meet individuals at their points of strength and ability and help overcome barriers to participation through relationship building and personal regard.
- to operate from accessible and appropriate venues in the area.
- to work with diverse groups within the community, from single unemployed men of all ages, to women returners to the workplace who have child care responsibilities. Equal Opportunities and accessibility is ensured through tailoring support to individual needs and provision of support services such as creche facilities.
- to work in partnership with the local community, local employers, Halton Chamber of Commerce, Halton People into jobs, Halebank Methodist Church, Community Health Centre, Halton Community Adult Learning Team, Sure Start Trailblazer and New Steps, Halebank Residents Association, Halton Youth Service, Connexions, Job Centre Plus amongst others, to deliver a cohesive and integrated approach.
- to engage with those residents who as yet have not taken up the opportunities for learning or employment and they will be supportively signposted to Kingsway Learning Centre and where appropriate to Sure Start, both of whom share the same targets of improving access to employment.
- to introduce opportunities for volunteering and training for local people, for example through our youth work and Community Parents Programme.
- to encourage cross generational work through our partnership with Halton Youth Service and break down perceived cultural barriers to learning through a series of accessible family learning based activities.
- to offer Information, Advice and a Signposting Service for local people towards employment.
